The Smart Women of Malta
The government of Malta in collaboration with Microsoft Malta Ltd, is offering the women of Malta an offer that they can not refuse. With a calculated six of every 10 Maltese women being inactive, the Smart Women programme provides free training in ICT at different levels and in different specialisations. “The free specialist ICT training course will empower women with new skills as well as enhance their value in the labour market by becoming certified in areas for which there is a huge demand,” said Microsoft country manager Pierre Mallia. The programme includes a basic computer course and Microsoft certification in business, development and technical areas. The courses, which are tailored to encourage women to participate in the ICT world, also include free childcare facilities. The president of the National Council of Women, Doreen Micallef, said this initiative would help fulfil a number of the council’s objectives, which includes the integration of women in the labour market, offering equal opportunities to women and bridging the gender pay gap. Over 1,600 women are currently taking part in the Smart Women project with over 960 applications for attendance in the basic ICT course.
