New book surveys African identities
A new book surveying emerging national identities in four African cities has recently been published by African Minds, entitled, “Identity in Four African Cities.” The publication underlines that while individual identities have been preserved, these also serve to strengthen the collective identities of burgeoning states on their path to becoming nations.
A recent report from the Office of the South African President claims that the country’s citizens evince a strong sense of national identity. However, diversity, in terms of race, class and nationality/language remains strong. It is with this premise that the book explores different aspects of African identity. It includes articles like “Space and identity,” “Domestic workers, job access and work identities,” “Planning for ‘difference’,” and the “Importance of language identities.”
