Labour shortage slows Danish economy
The Danish economy is losing steam because of a lack of manpower. With this period full employment, gains have become increasingly difficult to attain; figures released this month point to GNP growth rate of just 1.8 percent for the year. The chamber of commerce has already found cases where the country has lost export partners to competitors due to their inability to increase production.
Increasing the number of workers would redress some of these problems. Last year, the government reformed retirement age but this will only start taking effect in a decade, and in the meantime provides no short-term solutions. Attracting migrants is also problematic because of the country’s high tax rate. In short, industries may now be forced to take a second look at persons they may not have considered a decade ago and create inclusive working conditions: everyone stands to gain.
