Increasing Roma University Students

The number of Roma students attending universities in Serbia has tripled in the past several years. In 2005, there were only six Romas studying in Niš, while there are several dozen today. Most Roma students at the University of Niš are studying medicine, and they are also numerous at the Faculty of Philology. Romologist and professor at the university Dragoljub B. Dordevic says that the need for education of the Roma population is increasing simultaneously with the change in their social-economic structure and legal-political environment. “The increase in Roma university graduates is a vital point for the future of equality and non-discrimination for the people group,” says European Diversity’s Perry Hwang. “With an increased presence of Roma peoples in schools and the workplace, their diverse perspectives and unmeasured potential could be ground-breaking within European businesses.”
