Formation of the new Austrian government: Valuable steps towards equality

The composition of the recently elected Austrian government shows the country’s efforts towards equal treatment of men and women. Eight of the twenty top positions in the Austrian government are filled by women – this means an average of 40 percent of ministresses and state secretaries. Additionally, the Austrian National Council („Nationalrat“) is headed by a female deputy. Christiane Baur, regional attorney for the equality question in Salzburg reacted: „The formation of our government will definitely have a signal effect for Austrian women, because they now see how far women can come in our society“. In the non-public realm, Baur states companies have started to promote equality, Diversity and Gender Mainstreaming programmes.
