Discussions about ban of veils in Great Britain
After former British foreign secretary Jack Straw revealed that he asked female constituents to remove the niqab during interviews with him, a heated debate was started in Great Britain about a possible ban of the veil in public – a similar law has been created by the Dutch Government before.
One in three people in Britain would support a total ban on the wearing of the Muslim full-face veil in public, according to a survey published Wednesday by the BBC. The poll found that 33 percent would approve of a blanket ban – 56 percent would not. 61 percent said they would back a ban in airports and at passport control, 53 percent in courtrooms and 53 percent in school classrooms.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair, however, said it was a “mark of separation” at a time when the government is pushing for better integration of the country’s ethnic communities.
