Positive Ageing Week in Ireland

Many people have negative perceptions about ageing. To dispel negativity around ageing and to emphasis the positive aspects that ageing holds for older people, the positive ageing week was celebrated in Ireland at the beginning of this month. This year over 400 events took place across the country and spread even into Northern Ireland trough a number of cross-boarder events. The Week is based on the International Day for Older People, 1st October each year. It is intended that the week includes a recognition and celebration of the multiple identities of older people. Actions were taken to raise awareness among the general public of the importance of eradicating clichés, stereotypes and violence, and promoting good relations regarding Age Diversity among all members of society. The week has a number of objectives: Increase awareness of ageing matters in Ireland, highlight the work of Age Action and to promote cooperation and support between other community, voluntary and private sector groups are some of them.
