France’s Barometer on Discrimination in the Private and Public Sector

HALDE (Haute Autorité de Lutte contre les Discriminations et pour l’Egalité) and the OIT (International Labour Organisation) have published the third edition of the Barometer of Discrimination at Work in France. Through this collaboration, the evolution of perceived discrimination in the French public and private workplaces can now be assessed over three years. This edition shows that the proportion of victims and witnesses of discrimination has been increasing for three years. The private sector employees are more likely to report having experienced discrimination (36% compared to 28% in 2009, 25% in 2008) than public agent (26% compared to 22% in 2009). In France, employment is still the first area of discrimination as expressed by the claims received by participating organizations. It is therefore a priority to have an updated overview of the perceptions, attitudes, knowledge and awareness of discrimination and inequality in the workplace. This study also delivers useful information on how to mobilize action to fight more effectively against discrimination and promote equality in the workplace.
