2010 European Report & Conference on Gender Equality

The European Commission reports each year on developments towards gender equality in the EU Member States and presents future challenges and priorities. This year, there is a positive trend towards a more gender-equal society and labour market, yet gender inequalities persist, mainly to the disadvantage of women. The current economic crisis has raised concerns that the achievements in gender equality are at risk and that the effects of the recession will put greater pressure on women. Gender equality policies are part of the response to these challenges but the crisis reinforces the need for these policies to demonstrate their cost-effectiveness. You can access the full report here.
The continual efforts for Gender Equality in the EU will be discussed at the ‘Conference on Non-legislative Initiatives for Companies to Promote Gender Equality at the Workplace’ on May 2nd, 2010. At the conference, the results of a European study investigating initiatives such as prizes, awards, labels, charters, rankings etc. targeted at promoting gender equality in businesses and organisations will be presented. In this context, the conference will focus on presenting good practice initiatives as well as hands-on experience and innovative gender equality measures of selected companies. Above all, the conference will give room for an extensive debate with experts and relevant stakeholders on future perspectives and further steps in promoting gender equality in the workplace.
